Biography

Carl F. Eglinsdoerfer, age 84 years of Niles, Michigan died Sunday evening, February 17, 2013 at his home unexpectedly, but of natural causes.

He was born on April 6, 1928 in Benton Harbor, Michigan to Walter and Mabel (Erfurth) Eglinsdoerfer. He attended Benton Harbor Schools, and moved from Berrien Springs, Michigan to Niles in 1969. He was employed for forty years at the Whirlpool Corporation. After retirement, he was employed at the former Greater Niles Economic Development Corporation (now SMEGA) in its former business incubator.

Carl was a member of Saint Mark Catholic Church in Niles. He enjoyed camping at area lakes with his family. He also enjoyed photography, mostly using the black & white style, and developing the photos in his own darkroom. He had also been active in the use of amateur radio.

On June 10, 1950 in Saint Joseph, Michigan he married the former Roma Worick, who tragically died on August 26, 1962 in an automobile accident which also took the life of their daughter, Sally Eglinsdoerfer and an unborn child.
Later, on February 8, 1964 in Niles he married the former Phyllis “Joan” Merrill who preceded him in death on December 9, 2007. He was also preceded in death by five siblings, Walter and Harry Eglinsdoerfer, Helen Jonatzke, Adeline Wells, and Freida Wiedner.

Surviving family includes his children, Sally’s twin, Susan K. (& William) Gartke of Genoa, Illinois, Florence K. (& Jay) Lynch of Phoenix, Arizona, James C. (& Keith Harmon) Eglinsdoerfer of Hallandale Beach, Florida, and Robert D. (& Maxine) Eglinsdoerfer of Saint David, Arizona; grandchildren, Isaac, Jacob, and Sarah Eglinsdoerfer, Mike, and Dave Gartke, Joann Squires, Jay, and Karen Lynch; great-grandchildren Sean, Joshua, Teriann, and Keely; and Carl’s siblings, twin sisters, Marion Stiles of Berrien Springs and Mary Braman of East Jordan, Michigan, and brother, Edward Eglinsdoerfer of Milan, Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Carl Eglinsdoerfer will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 25, 2013 at Saint Mark Catholic Church by the Rev. Thomas King, C.S.C. of the parish. Committal Rites will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with a Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. by Brother Dennis Meyers, C.S.C. Contributions in memory of Carl may be made to Saint Mark Catholic Church.
