Howard J. Smuda

Howard J. Smuda, 89, of Niles, died peacefully Tuesday, September 23, 2025 in the comfort of his family’s presence.

His life began December 23, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois the youngest of four children born to Leo and Emily Smuda. He married Joyce Hiler April 4, 1959 in Lake County, Indiana.

Howard cherished his family and was a devoted husband for sixty-seven years. He enjoyed keeping busy and taking care of his home whether it was working outside or tinkering inside. He was jokester and made friends easily. Horses were a big part of his life. He was part owner of S and H Quarter Horse Farm and was behind the scenes at the shows. Later he passed his love of horses on to his granddaughter, Haley, following her to horse shows as well.

Howard will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Joyce Smuda of Niles; sons, Mark (Diane) Smuda of Buchanan, Jeff (Cathy) Smuda of Niles; seven grandchildren, Derek Hoskin, Haley (Kevin) Dey, Katelyn Smuda, Rachel Smuda, Taylor (Kellie) Purucker, Seth (Hannah) Purucker, Jared (Michaela) Purucker; five great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather Monday, September 29, 2025 from 12:00 noon until time of service at 2:00 p.m. in Halbritter Wickens Funeral Services, 615 Main Street, Niles, Michigan 49120.

Mr. Smuda will be laid to rest in Mission Hills Memorial Gardens where he will be accorded full military honors.
