Ina R. Green

Ina R. Green, age 89 years of Niles, Michigan, loving aunt, walker, and gardener died peacefully at 10:57 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2022 at Riveridge Manor in Niles following an extended illness.

She was born on March 24, 1933 in Charleston, Arkansas to Marvin and Barbara (Cotton) Shelby, and was graduated from high school in Arkansas.  After moving to Niles, she was employed for more than twenty years at the former Niles plant of Simplicity Pattern Company where she and many neighborhood women folded - by hand - the tissue paper printed patterns in the very exacting manner that would fit in the well-known Simplicity Pattern envelopes.

Ina enjoyed outdoor activities including walking various routes throughout her eastside neighborhood, and maintaining a beautiful flower garden at home.

On October 2, 1963 in Niles she was married to Frederick E. Green, Jr. with whom she celebrated the thirty-first anniversary of their wedding prior to his death on September 23, 1995.  She was also preceded in death by her parents and by her siblings Woodrow Shelby, Clavin Shelby, Joe T. Shelby, Archie Shelby, Holman Eugene Shelby, and Millie Tittle.

Survivng family includes Fred’s sons, Rod and Rick Green and their children, Denise and Kevin; and many nieces and nephews including Woodrow’s daughter, Rosalee Mather who has provided Ina’s care.

The family of Ina Green will gather in the spring of 2023 for graveside committal services at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan where a grave was reserved for her next to Fred, who was an Honorable Veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy.  Arrangements were completed at the Halbritter-Wickens Funeral Home, 615 East Main Street in Niles.  Online condolences may be left at:

Ina led a simple, quiet life as a productive member of her community, greeting neighbors while walking to work or for pleasure, and caring for her family, and especially for Fred.
