Joan Dian Pointer, age 84 of Niles and Buchanan Michigan, mother, grandmother, and friend died peacefully on Saturday, December 17, 2022 – exactly a week short of her Christmas Eve birthday - at Rosehill Home in Berrien Springs, Michigan following an extended illness.  Her family is grateful for the kind, compassionate, and effective care provided by the staff of Rosehill Home.

She was born on December 24, 1937 in Hinsdale, Illinois to Woodrow W. and Latha (ZaRodney) Doss, and moved as a child with her family to Buchanan.  She was graduated from Buchanan High School in 1956.  She later moved to Niles, and was employed at Associates Finance in Buchanan.  She and many co-workers followed Associates to Texas in 1995, and upon retirement Joan returned to Buchanan in 2003.

Joan was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Buchanan, and in Texas she attended the First Presbyterian Church of Woodhaven where she also sang in the church choir.  She was a member of the Niles-Buchanan YMCA where she enjoyed workouts and water aerobics; and she enjoyed travelling by the railroad with friends for many vacations.

Surviving family includes her daughter, Tamera Leonard of Buchanan, and son, David Pointer of Berrien Springs; grandchildren, Brandi (& Jeremy) Kelley, Ashley (& Dan) Lawson, and Aaron (& Stephanie) Kelley; and great-grandchildren, Adrianna, Morgan, Brady, Easton, Maximus, Ayden, Chris, Adabell, and Jaxon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, by her sisters, Sandra Skinner and Sharon Rodick; and by her son-in-law, Pat Leonard.

The family of Joan Pointer will gather in the spring of 2023 for graveside committal services at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan.  Arrangements were completed at the Halbritter-Wickens Funeral Home, 615 East Main Street in Niles.  Online condolences may be left at:

Joan always felt safe at home, but she loved life, including going out to visit her co-workers and friends, and she truly dedicated her life to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren
