Marty Wayne Liggett, 85, of Niles, died peacefully Friday, February 6, 2026.
His life began March 4, 1940 in South Bend, Indiana the child of Cecil and Marjorie Liggett. He married Diane Fougerousse March 12, 1960 in the First Presbyterian Church in Niles.
Marty’s claim to fame was that he lost to Milt Pappas one to nothing despite throwing a no hitter. Milt Pappas went on to play major league ball. He loved to dance and he and Diane won a dance-a-thon in 1959. He was known for his jitterbug. He played fast pitch softball for several years. Marty went on to compete in triathlons from the age of 50 to 75. He placed in every race he competed in. He was a 1958 graduate of Niles High School where he was a thespian and received nine varsity letters for his athletic ability. Marty enjoyed the Chicago Cubs and Blackhawks but was an avid Bears fanatic. He had a deep love of chocolate, movies, and ‘50s rock n roll. He was ahead of his time: he raised strong, independent women that could do anything they put their minds to. He cherished his wife and daughters, but they also knew that he loved and supported them no matter what. He was a big part of his community and was active on the Parks and Recreation Department. He was an instrumental part of bringing the River Valley Trail that runs from Niles to South Bend to fruition.
Marty will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his daughters, Kelly Maxwell of Niles, Marci Katzenberger of South Bend, Indiana; four grandchildren, Kateasha Crespo of Niles, Dillon Wayne Crespo of Niles, Cali Katzenberger of South Bend, Indiana, Wyatt Katzenberger of South Bend; six great grandchildren, Dakota Wayne Crespo, Abbyrose Crespo, Aubriana Holmes, Annabelle Crespo Ainsley Hoilmes, Denny Wayne Crespo; son-in-law, David Crespo, Sr. of Niles; and a few nieces, nephews, and cousins.
