Dowagiac

Matthew “Matt” Miles Morton, 72, of Dowagiac, died peacefully Wednesday April 22, 2026 with his brothers at his side.

His life began May 25, 1953 in Dowagiac, Michigan the second son of three boys born to Robert and Marciele Morton.

Matt was a 1971 graduate of Dowagiac Union High School and a member of the Michigan National Guard where he served in the tank division. As and active member of the Dowagiac Eagles 2441, he could often be seen enjoying a glass of wine and a smoke on the back deck. He enjoyed the outdoors and was most at peace sitting by the waterfall he built, feeding the fish, and drinking his wine. Matt loved kayaking and taking photos on the river. This led to his pursuit of photography which included photos of covered bridges, waterfalls, lighthouses and other scenic shots throughout Michigan and Indiana. Later he branched off and began taking senior portraits, wedding photos, and photographing events for the Pokagon band of Potawatami. Matt was always willing to help out those who were down on their luck.

Matt will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his twin brother, Mark Morton of Dowagiac, brother, Robert “R.B.” (Cathy) Morton of Dowagiac; nieces, Tara (Tony) Schaefer, Keera (Matt) Morton-Hayes; nephew Eric (Kayla) Morton; great nieces, Ella Schaefer, Maggie Hayes, Drew Hayes; great nephews, Collin Schaefer, Owen Morton; and many cousins and lifelong friends.
