Russell Dee Chappel

Russell Dee Chappel, 90, passed away at 12:26 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, at Lakeland Hospital, Niles.

Russell was born on Nov. 25, 1927, in Clarkton, Mo., to the late John H. and Viola M. (Conway) Chappel. On Jan. 16, 1960, Russell married Dessie Pearl East and she passed away on March 2, 2014.

He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, John “Jack” Jones; son, Paul Chappel; brother, John “Jay” Chappel; and sisters, Imogene Straw and Betty Sias.

Russell is survived by his sons, Steven (Margie) Chappel of Watervliet, and Kenneth (Ruth Thornton) Chappel of Coloma; daughter, Patricia (Michael) Herman of Niles; grandchildren: Russell Chappel, David Chappel, Tom Herman, Jennifer Dinges, and Stephanie Stacey; and five great-grandchildren.

Russell honorably served his country in the Army Air Corp from 1945-48 and was stationed in British Guiana in South America. He reenlisted in the Army from 1949-52 and served as a staff sergeant in Berlin, Germany. He retired from Clark Equipment in Buchanan, after 24 years of service. He enjoyed bowling.

Cremation will take place with private burial in Keeler Cemetery. Halbritter Wickens Funeral Home is assisting the family.
