Shannon Lea Stephens

January 27, 1970 — February 18, 2024

Niles, Michigan

Shannon Lea Stephens, age 54 years, of Niles, Michigan; mother, grandmother, companion, and friend died unexpectedly and peacefully on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at her home, following an extended illness.

She was born on January 27, 1970 in Niles to Larry R. and Shirley J. (Covington) Stephens, and attended Niles Community Schools.  She was always employed behind the scenes, performing the hard labor at area manufacturing plants, at a wholesale florist, and on one of the roofing crews of Midland Engineering.  She also was employed as a registered home healthcare aide, although her own health issues gradually affected her ability to serve.

When home from work, Shannon enjoyed cooking, and had mastered her mother’s famous dumpling recipe.  While she led a quiet life, her door was always open for folks wishing to visit, her ear always willing to listen, and – after listening – when needed, she offered wise counsel.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Shirley Covington Stephens on May 3, 2011 and Larry Stephens on August 18, 2019; and by her sister, Robin Whitmire on September 28, 2017, and brother, Larry Richard “Rick” Stephens on May 27, 2020.

Surviving family includes her long-time best friend, Todd Holmes; her son, Dane Holmes (& fiancée Chelsea Duncan) of Van Alstyne, Texas; grandchildren Cambria and Rylin; and Shannon’s brother, Adam “Buddy” Stephens, and several nieces and nephews.

The family of Shannon Stephens will gather privately to share memories and honor her life.  Arrangements were completed at the Halbritter-Wickens Funeral Home, 615 East Main Street in Niles.  Online condolences and memories may be left at:

Shannon worked hard to provide for her family, and provided a home and meals that were warm and inviting, nourishing the souls of those around her, evidence of her heart and love, especially for those closest to her.
