Stanton C Walter

Stanton Christopher Walter, age 62 years, formerly of Niles, Michigan and Mishawaka, Indiana died unexpectedly but peacefully last week at his home in Indianapolis.

He was born on May 3, 1961, in Niles to Scott C. and Sharon C. (Ritter) Walter and attended Niles Community Schools.  He continued his education at IUSB, taking courses in mathematics.

For over 20 years he was employed at Underground Pipe & Valve, calling on municipal utilities and industries to provide the components for heavy infrastructure. He was a natural salesman and entrepreneur, eventually owning and operating his own business.

Stan was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Niles Elks #1322. When younger he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing center for the Niles Vikings.

As a father he took the boys and other family members on cruises, trips to Florida, golf outings and deep-sea fishing. He always strived to give his boys and family members these memorable experiences. He was a fan of the Indianapolis 500 and Arlington horse track. Stan's lifelong friend Joe Catalano and their families shared many fond memories of attending these events.

He built and renovated several family homes throughout his life, a trade that he learned from his father Scott and passed down to his sons. These include a house on the river in Mishawaka, Indiana, that he built with his son Joe and others as well as a beautiful cottage on his family’s property in Saint Ignace, Michigan overlooking the lake.

As a salesman, he enjoyed entertaining guests as well as his family, sometimes golfing, sometimes hosting tailgate parties offering food a bit above normal tailgate fare. He was a drummer, often playing at the Slippery Noodle Inn in Indianapolis.  His greatest interest was raising his sons with stability and consistency, helping them to be better young men; and when he became a grandfather, he found an entire new love for his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Scott Walter on July 25, 1997, and Sharon Walter on June 9, 2014; and by a lifelong friend, Joe Catalano in 2002.

Stan was previously married to Brenda Holmes. He is survived by their sons, Zachariah (& Tammi) Walter of Panama City Beach, Florida, and Joseph (& Ashley) Walter of Elkhart, Indiana, grandchildren, Cohen Walter, and Graham Walter; Stan’s siblings, Stephanie (& Raymond) Masterson, and Steven (& Nancee) Walter, both of Niles; and several nieces and nephews.

The family of Stan Walter will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, March 16, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Halbritter-Wickens Funeral Home, 615 East Main Street in Niles, and will conclude with a time of sharing memories.

Stan’s 62 years feel too short, but he used all those years well, making friends everywhere he went, leaving lasting impressions on his customers and exercising his entrepreneurial spirit. More importantly, he loved those closest to him, making a difference in their lives, especially his sons and their families.
