Betty Hartline

September 24, 1932 — March 23, 2020

Betty M. J. Hartline, 87, of Niles, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 23, 2020 after several months under the loving care of her family and the compassionate and capable staff of West Woods of Niles Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Betty was born on September 24, 1932 in Portageville, MO to the late Robert Elton and Gela (Luker) Jones.  She was a member of the Galien High School Class of 1950.  Her classmates were in agreement in their yearbook description of Betty that “whenever crossed, she speaks her mind; but underneath, her heart is kind”.  She was affectionately called Bets, Hon, Mom, Birdie (not Grandma), Sis and Aunt Betty.

On July 28, 1951 in Buchanan she married her sweetheart and classmate, Clint Hartline. Together they enjoyed many years of dancing in sync and spending fun times with friends.

Betty is survived by Clint, her husband of 68 years, their son Ray (Karyn) Hartline and grandson Cooper Hartline, all of Niles.  She is also survived by brothers Harold (Kaye) Jones of Sister Lakes, MI and Rodger Jones of Talbott, TN, one sister Shirley (Clayton) Wiker of Sister Lakes, MI, several nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.

The kids have many fond memories of Aunt Betty’s great Pool & Pizza Parties every Summer and her innate willingness to fulfill their every wish.  The doors to her heart and her home were ever open wide to her friends and cherished family, both immediate and extended.

Never to be found idle, Betty began working as a young teen, babysitting and mowing lawns for neighbors and summer residents of the Dayton Lake area, where she grew up.  She later filled roles as telephone operator, secretary, dental office manager, and even a span as a security  guard.  She enjoyed working alongside Clint to envision, create, and maintain their lovely home, including the manicured lawn, landscaping and perfectly placed floral and decorative accents.

Travel was enjoyable when work was done. A treasured memory was a 2001 trip to the Hawaiian Islands in celebration of their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Betty possessed a special style and class all her own.  It was her passion to make the world a more peaceful and beautiful place, and to share it with those around her.  She was dearly loved and will be sorely missed.

Interment will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan.  In view of the current Coronavirus

(COVID-19) Worldwide Pandemic and mandated social distancing, private family services will take place graveside in the open air on Thursday, March 26, 2020.  Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Halbritter Wickens Funeral Services 615 E. Main St. Niles.
