Casey Jones

Casey Jones, age 70 years of Buchanan, Michigan died at 7:15 a.m. on Monday, May 3, 2021 following an extended illness.

He was born on September 7, 1950 in Mishawaka, Indiana to Ben R. and Shirley (Evans) Jones, and attended South Bend schools.  He moved with his mother to Tennessee for several years before returning to the Michiana area.  Medical challenges early in his life created vocational barriers, but never affected his spirit.  He always carried his side of a conversation, and looked forward to your next visit.  He lived in Niles, Michigan for several years, and has lived in Buchanan for many years.

Casey was aware of his name’s association with the railroad legend, J. L. “Casey” Jones, but wasn’t interested in that, and only tolerated references from new acquaintances.  What interested Casey was plants, and especially the houseplants that he watered and nurtured.  He also enjoyed following family members and relatives through cellular telephone messages and Facebook postings.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben Jones, Sr. and Shirley Ann Highland; and by his brothers, Greg Highland and Ben Jones, Jr.

Surviving family includes his children, John, Shirley, James, Dennis, and Jeffrey, all of Tennessee; Casey’s siblings, Helen (& Bill) Barlow of Buchanan, Delsie Ewing of Texas, Theresa Highland of Tennessee, and Jenny Wilson, Raymond (& Rose) Jones, and Ted Jones, Sr., all of Indiana, and Kenny Jones; and many nieces and nephews.

The family of Casey Jones will gather privately to share memories and celebrate his life.  Interment will be later, privately, in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan.  Arrangements were made at the Halbritter-Wickens Funeral Home in Niles.  Online condolences may be left at:

Even though Casey enjoyed the quiet solitude of caring for houseplants, he was clearly a “people person”, willing to talk to everyone he met, and always caring for his family, especially his mother.
