James Herrmann

James Peter Herrmann, 71 of Niles, passed away at his home on Thursday, September 30, 2021.

Jim was born on June 9, 1950 in Niles to the late Victor and Hilda Herrmann.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Mindy Marie Herrmann and his sister, Rita Ann Kenny.

On November 20, 1976 in Niles, Jim married Nancy Beckman at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church.

Jim is survived by his wife Nancy and their children, Katie (Franklin) Huff of Edwardsburg, Nicholas (Corie) Herrmann of Jacksonville, FL, Zachary (Meagan) Herrmann of Lansing, grandchildren; Morgan, Benjamin, and Brady Huff, Noelle and Noah Herrmann and Mia Rose and Bailey Herrmann. He is also survived by his brothers, Robert Herrmann of Niles and Edward Herrmann of Richland, MI. as well as several nieces and nephews.

Jim was a member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.  He was also a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

After Jim graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelors Degree in Education, he taught 5th and 6th grade at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception School for 14 years. He then worked at the Post Office as a Letter Carrier for the next 32 years before retiring. While there, he was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers where he was the Secretary for many years.  He also was in charge of the annual Letter Carrier’s food drive.

Jim loved sports.  He was an avid Green Bay Packers, New York Yankees and Notre Dame fan.  He was often involved with his children’s sports either as coach, assistant coach or spectator. He had coached 5th and 6th grade basketball while working at St. Mary’s.  Jim had also been a volunteer at Coveleski Stadium (now Four Winds Field).  He also was a volunteer at Notre Dame sporting events for over 20 years. Jim’s greatest enjoyment was watching his children and grandchildren play sports.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Jim on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at 11:00 am in St. Mary of the Immaculate Consumption 219 S. State St. Niles. Family will receive friends and family from 10:00 am until the time of service. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Arrangements have been made at Halbritter Wickens 615 E. Main St. Niles.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Christian Service Center Food Bank at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church 219 S. State St. Niles, MI 49120.
